Adventures in Lip Fillers

7/16/2022 - I've always been a girly girl. I love dresses, makeup, hair, heels, nail polish, the works. That is probably mostly why I became a cosmetologist. I loved my 30s, but the 40s are pushing back a little bit. I've noticed a little more cushion around the stomach and thighs. I've mentioned this to my friends who are a little older; one said, "You think 40s are bad, wait until you're 60!" I've decided to start with some preemptive actions immediately, more about this later. During my routine 8-week Botox injections, I got adventurous when my doctor suggested lip filler. Fun, why not.

The procedure was painless, and most people didn't notice, but I liked them. Fast forward 4 months, I noticed they started to lump up into balls under my skin. First just one (no big deal), but now I have 2 on the bottom and two on top. I know this is odd, but I feel like when I am out in the sun a lot, it seems to activate the lumps. The worst part is my top left side expanded more than the right, so now it's not only big but lopsided. Needless to say, my lumpy duck lips are getting dissolved on Tuesday.

August 30, 2022 UPDATE: While the dissolve process is very painful, the injections felt like a bee stinging my lip. I was also given a three-day steroid because my doctor thought it could be an internal flare-up. Both helped a little, but it's not until now (6 weeks later) that it looks almost back to normal. I do agree with my amazing doctor; I think that was a rare and isolated case. I was under a lot of stress, and I think that played a part.

What I've learned. Any alterations to your body should not be taken lightly, and trust me, I had plenty. I'm talking not only about tattoos, tanning beds, and tequila but surgery, vaccines, and yes, even lip fillers. As harmless and common as we think they are, you may pull the short straw, and your body may completely reject it. Your decision may have a lifelong effect that will have you asking, "Why did I do that?"

I once read, "What would happen if the day you were born, you were assigned one car and that car had to last you the rest of your life. How would you treat it?"

For me, a lot better than I currently treat my Nissan Altima, that's for sure! If you didn't figure it out, they were comparing your car to your body. You only have one body, and it has to last you your lifetime. Needless to say, no more lip filler for me!
